Understanding the Terminology
The Individual Education Plan (IEP): The IEP is a written plan describing the special education program and/or services required by a particular student, based on a thorough assessment of the student's strengths and needs. An IEP is developed for every student identified as exceptional by an Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC). In addition, an IEP may be developed for a student who has not been formally identified as exceptional, but who requires a special education program and/or services based on assessment information. For more information, please . click for a SCDSB brochure explaining more about IEPs
Modifications and Accommodations: Students may require specific interventions in school courses in order to achieve academic success. Accommodations and modifications are two interventions that may be implemented. Program modifications may involve changes to the grade-level expectations in the Ontario curriculum, and therefore the need to modify the course material. This may include a reduction in course material or a shift in course level to support learning. Accommodations are supports or services that are implemented to help the student access the curriculum and demonstrate learning. Examples of accommodations include extra-time, oral assessment, or preferential seating.
Alternative Expectations and Courses: Alternative expectations are developed to help students acquire knowledge and skills that are not represented in the Ontario curriculum. Because they are not part of a subject or course outlined in the provincial curriculum documents, alternative expectations are considered to constitute alternative programs or alternative courses (secondary school courses).
Examples of alternative programs include: speech remediation, social skills, orientation/mobility training, and personal care programs. For the vast majority of students, these programs would be given in addition to modified or regular grade level expectations from the Ontario curriculum. Alternative courses are non-credit courses.
Resource Room at EDHS
A student may access the Resource Room for support including:
* extra time for tests and assignments
* access a quiet work area
* complete assignments
There may be times when it is more appropriate for students to remain in their classes (eg. for group assignments or during a lesson) and arrangements can be made to access Resource at a different time. For students supported by an IEP who wish to write an exam in Resource, a Resource Centre Exam Request Form needs to be completed by the student and classroom teacher together prior to the scheduled exam.
If you have any questions about accessing the Resource Room please contact your student's assigned Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT).
Learning Centre at EDHS
The Learning Centre classes are non-credit bearing programs that focus on literacy, numeracy, social, and personal skills. The programs are customized to suit the needs of the student. Students are integrated into other courses within the school.
